Leveling

Two pencils, a brass calibration weight, and a bubble level on a conference table

Friday. 11:03. ladder review.

HR wants comments before the new IC ladder is locked. The nominal VP invited six of us who supposedly understand the job.

Nemesis is here. yeah.

Nominal VP is the actual title. Directory says Nominal VP, Engineering.

nobody has explained nominal.

Voltage can be nominal. Maybe it means the number on the sticker and the electricity is allowed to be a little different. I don't know much about voltage. Or VPs.

Do i have to listen to her. Probably within some range.

She shares the ladder.

"We're working on definitions," she says. "Not mapping anybody."

"Great." I locate myself in the table immediately.

Sets org-wide technical direction adopted across engineering.

Nemesis highlights adopted.

"Every team?"

"Not every team," I say.

why did i answer. He asked the nobidal VP.

Nemesis looks at me. "Then what's org-wide?"

"The org generally."

the org generally.

"So three teams could be org-wide?"

"Depends on the three."

"How?"

"Some teams are more connective."

Connective. tissue teams.

The norminal VP stops typing.

"I don't mean more important," I say. "I mean more connected. Topo...logically."

This has not helped.

Nemesis says, "Platform teams."

"Not only platform. Product work can have fan-out."

"To teams?"

"To the org. Through teams." I make a weird motion with my hands

what am i building here.

I try again.

"Every team is a bad test. A shared platform gets breadth automatically. Product work can cross billing, auth, and support and still never touch, like, recruiting. That's still broad work."

Silence for maybe one second. Normal thinking silence. Nobidal silence.

The nosimal VP says, "Okay. Crosses team boundaries. What shows impact?"

"It survives after the person steps away," I say.

Good. adult sentence.

Nemesis says, "And somebody adopts it."

"Obviously somebody adopts it." Too haughty, i need to chill

"Then we agree."

His tone is pleasant. i don't like it.

"I was disagreeing with every team."

"I also disagreed with every team."

Hm.

"Can one of you write it?" the nordimal VP asks.

Nemesis's cursor is already there. Ugh, he's so quick

Defines durable technical direction across team boundaries, demonstrated through adoption.

Team boundaries is mine! Demonstrated through adoption is several words... some of them mine!

"Fine with me," I say. It really wasn't though.

"Good," the noginal VP says. "Leave it."

Meeting ends. I reopen the ladder.
